Spinning Reel
The spinning reel, also known as a fixed-spool reel, was developed in the early 1870’s to eliminate some of the problems associated with baitcasting reels. The first problem they sought to correct was ‘backlash’ which is phenomenon in which the line tangles during casting due to too much line being released at once. The second problem was that baitcasting reels can only cast heavier tackle and hence was not effective for smaller fish.
The spinning reel successfully solved these problems and added yet another dimension to the sport of fishing. This reel, though not for fly fishing, was designed to use artificial flies and other smaller tackle used to catch trout and salmon. It is important to learn how to ‘feather’ the line with this type of reel. ‘Feathering’ amounts to applying light pressure to the line with one’s finger while casting the line.
Although isn’t possible to get backlash with a spinning reel, it is possible to get the line wrapped around the reel during casting is the line isn’t feathered properly. It is also possible to have the whole line come off the reel for the same reason. These reels are great fun and great sport and are best used for catching lighter fish.
